Ultimately, the size of your chandelier comes down to where it is placed and the other furniture in the room. A chandelier is more than just a utilitarian light fixture. "Chandeliers are the jewels of a room," says designer Georgia Zikas. "They add instant sparkle and impact to your room and they can be as versatile or imposing as you wish." Although there are many different styles of chandeliers on the market, you should carefully evaluate your space before making a purchase. Tips for choosing the size of your dining room chandelier

The diameter of a dining room chandelier should be about half to two-thirds of the width of the chandelier. table on which it will hang. However, most designers are not averse to breaking the rules in the slightest. "I don't have a strict requirement about the size of the chandelier," notes Mary Patton of Mary Patton Design. "In fact, I generally prefer chandeliers that are intentionally larger."

Kim Coombs, from KBCO Design, adds that choosing a chandelier for a particular room doesn't simply come down to measurements. "When choosing chandeliers, I consider other important factors that will enhance the aesthetics of the room," he says. "For example, 'Do I want this lamp to be the focal point of the room?' and, 'Will it be the main source of lighting or is it to create a mood in the space?"

In a dining room with a long rectangular table, there are a few ways to go, according to Coombs. "A long, expansive chandelier is one option, as are several pendant lights to elongate the space," she says. "Using chandeliers or pendants creates interest, soft lighting effects and intimacy,

If you have a round table, a square or round accessory works best, and if you have a square table, you'll also want to select something round. Also remember the height when installing your chandelier, recommends Michael Cox, founder of foley & cox. "Make sure the ceiling drop allows adequate space above the table for uninterrupted dinner conversation and never restricts seasonal centerpieces."

Tips for lighting your home and other rooms with a chandelier

Oversized luminaires are becoming popular throughout the home, comments Shapiro. But, she notes, you should ensure that your ceiling is at least nine feet when growing. "The higher the ceiling, the bigger the fixture can be," notes Shapiro. "With high ceilings, you want to use a taller fixture. Scale is everything when it comes to lighting."

And just like in the dining room, you'll want to play around with the furniture you have on hand. "The style of your accessory should match the furniture selected for the space and reflect your personality," notes Judy Pickett, from Design Lines Signature. "When selecting lighting, don't forget to consider the shapes present in the room...as well as the scale of the room."

At the same time, some designers prefer to take a different route and look for the opportunity to juxtapose different design styles in a larger space. "Be bold and unexpected, consider intentional contrast with the rest of the elements in the room," advises Cox. "A sleek, modern accessory can infuse sexy energy into a traditional room and a vintage accessory adds patina to a minimal contemporary space."

If you want to install a chandelier in your bedroom, you also need to pay close attention to the height of the ceiling. And placement is key. "Your bedroom lamp shouldn't hang directly over the bed, if you can avoid it, but centered in the overall room," notes Shapiro. Of course, in smaller rooms, a bed can live directly in the middle of the space regardless.
